If you were not born in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, if you came to the UK legally on a visa, or if you came from a European Economic Area (EEA) country.
After at least five years in the UK you may be able to apply for naturalisation if you can meet one of the following requirements:
- You have had Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least 12 months
- You are from an EEA country and you have held permanent residence for at least 12 months
- You are the husband, wife or civil partner of a someone who holds British Citizenship, if you have lived in the UK for at least three years and have Indefinite Leave to Remain or a Permanent Residence Document.
