How much does a divorce cost?
This will depend on the circumstances of the case. In the event that both parties are in agreement to divorce then, costs will be kept low. However, should one of the parties not be in agreement or be difficult, the process could become protracted which will in turn increase costs.
The solicitor will likely charge an hourly rate so costs will depend on the level of seniority of the solicitor you will be instructing and you should check with the solicitor at the outset as to what their likely estimated fees will be. You will need to pay a court fee of £550 to accompany the petition to the court.
I’m thinking about a divorce, where do I go first and when should I use a solicitor?
You should try to get legal advice as early on as possible in order to find out where you stand legally and finding out what your options are. Don’t forget other options such as mediation or counselling which can help you to also resolve any issues between you. In order to locate a solicitor, you should look at The Law Society website and the Resolution website to find a Resolution accredited member.
What if my ex makes things difficult, what shall I do? My ex isn’t answering calls, emails and texts, what do I do?
You should instruct a solicitor to communicate with your ex in the event that they are being difficult. This will demonstrate that you are serious about taking matters forward and will hopefully help towards opening up the lines of communication with them.
What is the best way to find an amicable solution?
You should try to communicate with your ex as much as possible in order to try and come to an amicable agreement. Your solicitor will endeavour to be able to help you to achieve this and other non-confrontational methods should be considered such as mediation and the collaborative process.
What steps can I take to make sure that the kids are affected as little as possible?
Try not to have any conversations relating to the divorce in front of the children and try to always put their needs first. Also, refrain from posting anything relating to the divorce on social media.
